Dark Sky Award for South Kerry

The Irish Times newspaper is reporting  Southwest Kerry to receive rare ‘dark sky reserve’ status today that the South Kerry region is receiving the first "Dark Sky Reserve Status Award" in Ireland.
I have been out taking photographs of the stars and the night sky many times and I can only confirm that this area of South Kerry is indeed a fantanstic location for any stargazer and people who are interested in astro photography.

Well done to all the people involved from the South Kerry Astronomy group who developed this over the last years. A big thank you to Julie Ormonde for all the hard work.

Skelligs+Wind+ Light = Happy Photographer

One of the things that I like most in photography are those moments of luck when everything turnes unexpected my way.
I suppose everybody dedicated photographer had many of those moments when the light came back suddenly and this special moment just presents itself.
The Photographer Henri Cartier Bresson used to call it the gift that you receive when you are ready to receive it.

Taking photos during strong winds needs you to set the camera for a fast shutterspeed to get some clear shots even on the tripod. Hold the camera face down between shots to prevent salt and spraygetting on  your front lens or use your lens cover. Stay at a safe distance from the sea and check the tide in advance.
Enjoy nature and photography.

Reenroe Beach after the wild Days

Flooded fields, an ancient bog exposed and most of the sand gone, thats what Reenroe beach looks like after the storms we had for a couple weeks. The bridge over the river is damaged and closed for the public. Ballinskelligs beach is looking slightly better but the castle needs urgent protection otherwise it is going to be destroyed. The beach in St.Finians Bay looks like a dump with all the plastic rubbish washed up. Lets hope we get it all sorted in the coming weeks before I´m standing with my photography workshop students on those beautiful spots again.
